What Makes Oticon Zeal Different from Standard CIC and IIC Models

Oticon Zeal's micro-encapsulation design enables rechargeable battery, Bluetooth streaming, and AI processing in an invisible in-canal device, eliminating traditional CIC/IIC compromises.

If you've ever been drawn to a small, discreet hearing aid but walked away disappointed by what those devices couldn't do, Oticon Zeal was designed with you in mind. It sits in a new category — what Oticon calls the NXT design — that aims to deliver the invisibility of a traditional completely-in-canal (CIC) or invisible-in-canal (IIC) device without the long list of compromises that have always come with them.

Here's how Zeal compares to what came before.

The Traditional CIC/IIC: Small by Design, Limited by Design

Traditional CIC and IIC hearing aids have appealed to patients for one reason — they're hard to see. Tucked fully inside the ear canal, they offer a level of discretion that larger behind-the-ear and receiver-in-canal styles simply can't match.

The tradeoffs of the past, though, have been significant:

  • Disposable batteries only — no rechargeability in such a small package
  • No wireless streaming to phones or other devices
  • Limited processing power compared to larger models
  • More susceptibility to moisture and earwax damage
  • Custom impressions required, meaning no same-day fitting

For many patients, those limitations meant choosing between looking natural and hearing well. That's the problem Oticon Zeal sets out to solve.

Oticon Zeal's NXT Design: What Changes

Manufacturing First

The reason Zeal can do what traditional CICs can't comes down to how it's built. Oticon uses a micro-encapsulation process that seals the device's internal components in a solid protective resin, eliminating hollow spaces inside the device. This protects the electronics from moisture and debris (IP68-rated) and allows for a larger, fully sealed rechargeable battery — something not previously possible in a device this small.

Traditional CICs rely on size-10 or size-312 disposable batteries and house components in a shell that, by its nature, leaves gaps. Those gaps are where moisture and wax cause damage over time. Zeal's encapsulated design removes that vulnerability.

Rechargeability

Zeal provides up to 20 hours of battery life on a full charge — something no traditional CIC or IIC can offer. A 15-minute quick charge delivers 4 hours of use; 30 minutes provides 8 hours. The compact SmartCharger holds enough power for multiple full recharges on the go.

Traditional CICs require daily battery changes, which can be difficult for patients with dexterity or vision challenges. Zeal eliminates that entirely.

Sound Processing

Traditional CICs have always lagged behind larger hearing aids in processing power. Zeal runs on Oticon's Sirius chip with second-generation Deep Neural Network (DNN 2.0) technology — the same platform that powers Oticon Intent. The DNN 2.0 analyzes sound in 256 channels, compared to 24 in earlier versions, delivering more precise separation of speech from background noise.

In testing, Zeal provides up to 6 dB of signal-to-noise ratio improvement. Traditional CICs at similar price points offer nothing close to that level of processing.

Wireless Connectivity

This is perhaps the starkest difference. Traditional CICs and IICs offer little to no Bluetooth connectivity. Oticon Zeal streams directly to both iOS and Android devices via Bluetooth LE Audio, supports hands-free calling, and is Auracast-enabled right now — meaning it can connect to broadcast audio systems in theaters, airports, and other public venues without waiting for a firmware update.

A unique wrap-around antenna serves as both a retention cord and a Bluetooth antenna, using skin contact to maintain a stable connection. It also doubles as an extraction cord and naturally molds to the ear after a day or two of wear.

Fitting Flexibility

Traditional CIC/IIC devices require custom ear impressions and a lab turnaround — typically meaning at least two appointments before you're wearing your devices. Oticon Zeal can be fit the same day using standard domes, the same ones used with Oticon Intent. Custom micro-molds are available for patients who need or prefer them, but they're not required to get started.

Zeal fits approximately two out of three patients with a dome and is nearly invisible or only slightly visible in 94% of fittings.

A Fair Note on Candidacy

Zeal isn't right for everyone. It accommodates mild to moderately severe hearing loss — up to roughly 65 dB HL with domes, extending to around 75 dB HL with micro-molds. Patients with more significant loss or anatomy that doesn't suit an in-canal fit may be better served by a different style. A thorough evaluation is the only way to know.
